FilmG Workshops Take Place In Schools Across Scotland
FilmG, Scotland’s Gaelic short-film competition, is touring high schools with practical, industry-led workshops designed to help young filmmakers turn ideas into finished films in time for this year’s entry deadline on 28 February 2026.
Twelve workshops were completed before Christmas, spanning the Highlands, Argyll & Bute, the Central Belt and the North East, with many more scheduled for January and February, including at schools in the Western Isles.
The FilmG project is delivered by Astar Media on behalf of MG ALBA, with additional funding from Bòrd na Gàidhlig, allowing the workshops to have a wider reach and to continue providing an exciting and aspirational extracurricular experience.
With no set theme this year again for FilmG, participants have been given the freedom to explore any subject that inspires them. The workshops introduce pupils to story development, filming and editing, all while working in Gaelic.
MG ALBA’s Head of Publishing, Maggie Taylor, said: “FilmG is about opening doors, and these workshops see creativity meet confidence. Young people try camera work for the first time, shape their stories in Gaelic, and discover roles they didn’t know existed.”
Astar Media’s Project Manager for FilmG, Sarah Urquhart, said: “Teachers tell us the format works very well: a focused, hands-on experience that demystifies filmmaking and leaves pupils proud of what they’ve accomplished.
“Our tutors and our team support groups and classes from the beginning to the end; including scripting, providing kit, editing and the practicalities of submitting to FilmG.”
The FilmG competition welcomes entries across the three age tiers of -12, -18 and 18+, with categories designed to reflect age-appropriate short films and celebrate performance, creativity and storytelling.
