FilmG 18 has launched
FilmG returns for its 18th year with an extended timeline and refreshed categories
FilmG, Scotland’s annual Gaelic short film competition, returns for its 18th year with a bold new look and an overhauled competition timeline.
With filmmakers usually tasked with entering by early December, this year FilmG will remain open for submissions until the very end of February.
That leaves three months for Gaelic speakers from all over Scotland to develop, shoot, and edit their films, giving both new and returning participants plenty of time to bring their ideas to life.
Following the success of last year’s format, filmmakers will once again have complete creative freedom, with no prescribed theme, allowing participants to explore any subject that inspires them.
Information about this year’s FilmG competitions is available on the interim FilmG website, with a brand-new FilmG website expected to go live very soon. The new website will also include a new integrated FilmG competition entry system.
A new -12 competition tier has been introduced to shine a spotlight on the youngest emerging Gaelic talent, and the FilmG team have also released information on the website about the new categories in the -18 and 18+ competitions, with another bumper year expected for the short film project.
Murdo MacSween, FilmG Project Director at Astar Media, said: “Over the past three editions we’ve consistently seen more than 100 films submitted each year, so it’s exciting to keep growing a platform that helps Gaelic filmmakers make a name for themselves.”
“FilmG is aspirational but always attainable. If you want to make a film, or work in media, we’re here to support you.”
Workshops are currently underway in secondary schools across Scotland, giving young people the chance to learn about filmmaking, gain hands-on experience, and discover which parts of the production process interest them most. The FilmG team can also offer bespoke support on a case‑by‑case basis to filmmakers of all ages who may want to get involved.
MG ALBA’s Head of Publishing, Maggie Taylor, said: “FilmG is crucial in nurturing the next generation of Gaelic creators. Their voices and ideas will shape the future of Gaelic media.”
“We’re able to see new faces emerge every year as the numbers who participate grow, and we’re seeing a greater breadth of films of all sorts be nominated and win prizes; so this year’s FilmG feels full of exciting potential.”
FilmG nominations will be announced in the spring, with the winners to be announced in early summer.
